Jet Around Cayman fulfilled its promises.
The prospects of Jet Ski racing and beachside fun combined with large crowds and beautiful women all became a reality. The annual personal watercraft race, which takes place on the Queen’s birthday holiday, was close to royal.
Racing was fierce and Cayman’s local talent shined as four of the five classes were won by born-and-bred talent. Roshad Goff had the most acclaim by winning US$6,000 in prize money. From there the beach was loaded with fun activities for the young and young at heart.
The beach volleyball tournament, organised by the Cayman Islands Volleyball Federation, was a success with loads of teams taking part. Also, some of the sport’s top figures were out to show their support, including Olney Thompson, Shervin Rankin and Fareed Hosein.
The local dance and musical acts were also wildly entertaining and featured local athletes like basketball player Chad Leslie and footballer Leeroy Bodden. In fact, Bodden’s group, Underground While Above Ground (which featured Stefan Bodden, Antonio Watler and Pierre Dandie), drew arguably the biggest crowd with their rapping abilities and stage presence.
The kids’ zone offered a number of floating objects that youngsters took advantage of, including an inflatable rubber wall climber. The Walk On Water (WOW) balls expo showcased aquatic devices that the public entered and tried to move around in atop the water – tricky!
Of course there were a number of Jet Around models who showed off some interesting body paint featuring main sponsor LIME’s logo. A number of other activities included para-sailing, kite-surfing and paddle-boarding.
About the only downside to the day’s event was the absence of the beach flag football tournament. That was supposed to be organised by the Cayman Islands Flag Football Association but ended up being cancelled at the last minute.
