Boulevard Baptists seek net gains

Rising Stars netball club are slated to host Jamaica’s Boulevard Baptist.

The event, being called the 2011 Rising Stars Summer Netball Series, will feature both teams along with Roma, team Maples and Calder and the Frank Hall Homes Blazers. The four Cayman sides are part of the Cayman Islands Netball Association with Roma being the 2011 national champions and the Blazers being the reigning mixed league winners. Among the star players the public can watch for is the Stars’ Rosemarie Wilson, Roma’s Nicola Pringle and Kay Copeland, Maples’ Christina Gordon and Blazers’ Cynthia Collington.

Matches take place 15-17 at the University College of the Cayman Islands Hall. Rising Stars club manager Orvin Palacio states the games are designed to test local netball.

“In addition to our training and games, we have been fundraising quite a bit since this January,” Palacio said. “We want to fulfil one of the club’s objectives: encourage and facilitate opportunities for skill and team building experiences, locally and overseas. With this in mind, we accepted the invitation from the US Netball Association to participate in New York last week and we’re hosting the team from Jamaica. For the summer series we invited local clubs who display a high level of play on the netball court.”

Matches in the series take place at 6.15pm and 7.30pm. Rising Stars is partnering with the university college and Executive Class Entertainment to stage the event.

Tickets for each night will be on sale for $10. A weekend pass for all the games is available for $25. In addition the club will be holding its first annual raffle with the grand prize of an airline ticket from American Airlines. Other raffle sponsors are Comfort Suites, World Gym, Singh’s Roti Shop, Funky Tangs, Audiophile and Vanity Hair and Nails. Raffle tickets are $5. Proceeds will go to the club’s future plans which include the participation of their youth team in the Florida Netball Classic in October.

It should be noted that Boulevard Baptist are an above average team. The side are the division C winners for the Jamaica Netball Association. Taking part in the summer series is the latest move for the Rising Stars team. Days ago the side took part in the US national netball championships in the club division. The team took a compliment of 12 players (including two under 14 players), managers, coaches and two chaperones.

Both competitions come after a solid showing in the 2011 open league. The club’s ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams placed third in the champions and the plate division, respectively. The ‘A’ team had a great season losing only game in the regular season to go into the playoffs as the number two seed. While disappointed to miss out on a title shot, the team still fought hard in the playoffs for a top third finish.

The ‘B’ team, made up of mainly Under-23 players, had a rough season with players being injured and having conflicts with their academics and training schedules. The girls were excited that they pulled it together to get third place.
