Death cancels sound display

A tragic passing has cancelled a car audio gathering.

The Cayman Auto Enthusiasts Association has decided to put off this weekend’s event. Titled ‘Beating down yo block,’ the meet was slated to take place on the premises of Cayman Karting Ltd (on Sparky Drive off North Sound Road).

The reason for the cancellation stems from the untimely death of association member Brandon Powery, 18. The West Bay native crashed on his motorcycle last Sunday morning and later died at the Cayman Islands hospital. Powery played an active role in the association and took part in sound offs with a Honda Accord that emitted 128 decibels along with crew members of Dark Time Movements.

In his only press interview, Powery stated he was part of a group looking to do good in the community.

“The association was formed in January 2011,” Powery said. “We are here to support all associations and aspects of the automotive scene in the Cayman Islands though we mostly focus on the car audio scene. We want to keep the youth busy and out of trouble and this is one way a lot of young people can have something to do instead of being idle.”

For the record Powery’s funeral is slated to take place this Saturday 2 July at Wesleyan Holiness Church in West Bay. Viewing of the body takes place at 2pm with proceedings starting at 3pm. A candlelight vigil is slated to take place this Friday 1 July at 7pm at the John Gray Memorial Church.
