Crusaders buzzing for revenge

It has been a long season for the Cayman Free Press Buzz Crusaders.

After a winning season in 2010, the club limped into the 2011 playoffs with a 2-9-1 record. Yet in spite of being ranked 10th out of 11 teams in the Logic Five-a-Side Football league, the squad has a shot at glory.

The Crusaders are in the division two semi-finals for the competition. They play on Tuesday 5 July at 7pm at the Logic arena of Kings Sports Centre. Their opponents are an old rival in the Transformers, a group made up of inmates and guards from Northward prison. Both squads faced off in last year’s championship match, with Transformers emerging victorious.

On paper the edge might go to the Transformers. The side were fifth in the competition with a 6-6 record that earned them a first round bye. They have a better offence (42 goals compared to CFP’s 21) and a stingier defence (26 goals allowed compared to CFP’s 44).

However the Crusaders are not to be overlooked. The side is still riding high after beating Coconut Joes in the first round thanks to a 3-2 overtime victory. Buzz captain Rapha Harvey had the winning goal on a solid strike from outside the penalty box.

This Tuesday also sees the other division two semi-final contest. The sixth seed Security Centre (6-6) face the seventh seed Doghouse Devils (5-7) at 8pm. Security Centre had a first round bye while Doghouse clobbered bottom-ranked Chilled (0-11-1) in the first round.
