Latinos chase finals berth

Men’s softball in Cayman is near its climax.

This weekend sees the playoffs for the 29th Fast/Modified Pitch Softball League. On Sunday 14 August Latinos battle Jose’s Escape Pirates in two matches at the baseball field in West Bay. The two teams are competing in a best-of-three series with game three, if necessary, being played next Sunday 21 August.

Latinos and Pirates boast their own array of talents. Leading the way for Latinos, under Donald Watler, is basketball player Sandi Jiminez and motorbike racer Humberto Rives. Latinos have a history of success in recent seasons, being champions in 2009 and runners-up last year.

Both clubs are battling to face the A1 Rentals Patriots. The top-ranked squad have already earned a berth in the championship series, which will be a best-of-five format. Leading the Patriots are 2010 home-run champion Bradimir Robinson, multi-sport star David Taylor and baseball stalwart Peter Whittaker.
