Weekly tourism roundup for the Cayman Islands

Scuba Diving Magazine has named Grand Cayman among its top 10 shore diving locations worldwide. The magazine said that while many of the famous reefs and walls were only accessible by boat, there were some ‘gems to explore’.

“On the island’s west end is Eden Rock and Devil’s Grotto, a maze of grottoes and caverns where schools of silversides and silver tarpon hang out. It’s a long swim – about 150 yards – but well worth it to reach Babylon, just east of Old Man Bay on Grand Cayman’s East End,” wrote the magazine, which also advised its readers to check out shore dives from Sunset House, Cobalt Coast and Lighthouse Point.

Cayman ranked ninth overall with Bonaire, Oahu (Hawaii) and Curaçao the top three shore dive destinations.

The Casa Havana staff at the Westin Casuarina Resort and Spa has earned the Wine Spectator’s 2011 Award of Excellence for great service, wine expertise and an extensive wine list.

Caribbean Travel and Life Magazine has announced its latest set of Readers’ Choice awards and the Cayman Islands features prominently.

The islands are up for Best Destination, as selected by the editorial team of the magazine. Also nominated for awards are Cotton Tree (Best Small Hotel up to 75 Rooms); Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman (Best Family Resort, Best Caribbean Spa) and Westin Casuarina (Best Family Resort.)

Readers, online viewers and TV viewers will be able to cast their votes from now until 15 October. The winners will be announced in the January/February Best of the Caribbean special edition of the magazine.
