Red Cross celebrates 50 years

The table reservations are set. The entertainment is booked. The food and drinks will be aplenty.

All that awaits is the day of celebration – bon appetit!

The Red, Gold and Soul Dinner Dance to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Cayman Islands Red Cross and to raise money for the local chapter of the relief organisation is scheduled for 7.30pm, Saturday, 10 September, at the Westin Casuarina Resort and Spa.

Entertainment will feature performances by Tina Turner, and Donna Summer and the Supremes tribute artists. Individual tickets are $150 for a gourmet three-course meal, professional entertainment and opportunities to win one of many prizes. There will also be a live auction and a Red Cross balloon raffle.

‘Thank you’

“This is a nice way to say thank you,” says Jondo Malafa Obi, director of the Cayman Islands Red Cross. “Instead of just giving us money, which we do like, come out and celebrate with us. That’s what this is all about.

“We’ve been here on the Island for 50 years,” Obi said. “So we were trying to figure out who’s been around for five decades. We thought Tina Turner is a good act. And we found some tribute artists who do Donna Summer and the Supremes.”

The gala dinner and dance follows up on the annual Cayman Islands Red Cross golf tournament fundraiser slated for this weekend at the North Sound Golf Club.

Golf tournament

This year’s golf tournament allows participants to interact with legendary pros Nick Price and Mark McNulty. The tournament takes place on Friday, 2 September, and Saturday, 3 September, with tee-off times beginning at noon Friday and at 8am and 1pm Saturday. The Saturday 8am tee-off time is still available for registration, in addition to two free clinics hosted by the pros. The first clinic is for the kids and will take place on Friday from 8-10am, followed by the clinic for adults on Saturday afternoon. The cost to play in the tournament is $150 per person or $600 for a team of four.

Funds raised by these events allow the local Red Cross to pay for Advanced Disaster Preparation, Relief Management, HIV/AIDS education, first aid/CPR and AED, and services through the Thrift Shop. All funds raised during ‘A September to Remember’ are used directly in the local community in times of need.

The Red Cross also helps teach basic life saving skills by offering continuous CPR and first aid training to the community.

“Our trained volunteers provide coverage at events like marathons, national celebrations and parades, as well as during times of impending disasters,” says Peter Hughes, Red Cross training manager. “These volunteers play a vital role in our community. When a medical emergency arises, these individuals are trained to perform CPR until medical personnel arrive.”

The Red Cross provides first aid and emergency kits to families in the Cayman Islands, another valuable service. These resources are made available through the donations of individuals and through charitable events, like the golf tournament.

Make it a September to Remember

“The Cayman Islands Red Cross has done so much for the people of the Cayman Islands during times of need and they certainly deserve to be supported so that they may continue their efforts in the future,” says Michael Gayle, general manager at Cayman First Insurance Company, one of the sponsors.

Registration forms for the tournament and tickets for the dinner dance are available by contacting [email protected] or by calling 916-3345.

“As part of the celebration, the September to Remember, we’re hoping that the people who are part of it look back and say, ‘That was really great. We had a great time at the Red Cross events. We’ll never forget that,’” Obi says.
