Tikko Moore may have went to school abroad pursuing basketball but the young man is quickly making strides in American football.
The East End native was recently featured in a Santa Clarita Valley newspaper as a player to watch. The senior is part of the Santa Clarita Christian High School Cardinals.
In the feature Moore, 18, talked about his adjustment to the sport and life in California.
“When I got here, they signed me up for football,” Moore said. “I came out here and I tried out nearly every position. Honestly, it’s a real change, really different being so far from home. You aren’t doing the same things you used to, but as time goes on you change and adapt to where you’re at.
“I know the game better now. I know what I need to do, like how to tackle.”
The son of Primrose and James Moore is listed at 6ft 4in and 230 pounds. He played mostly as the team kicker last season with a stint at tight end. This year he is expected to take on more responsibilities, particularly on the defensive line and as a wide receiver. For the record Moore is receiving a basketball scholarship from the school.
As part of his experience he is staying with a host family called the Dillons (made up of mum Elena, son Luke and dad Kevin). Moore states they have helped with the adjustment.
“They helped me in any and every way possible. They do whatever they can no matter how difficult or hard it is.
They’re like a second family. Me and my mum are real close. My mum back home set me up to deal with stuff like this. I was kind of doing a lot of stuff on my own. All that she did really helped me. When I came over here, it was easier.”
