Young tourism ambassador sought

Awareness of tourism is key to a new competition from the Ministry and Department of Tourism.

The 2011 Tourism Speak-Off is open to secondary school children from 14 to 17 years old and will be conducted in the format of a Cabinet meeting.

Participants will discuss and respond to various tourism issues and aim to persuade an audience, each other and a panel of judges that their own ideas are best.

The contest begins in the preliminary round with students submitting an essay titled “What Can we Do in the Preservation and Conservation of our Culture and Heritage?”

Four semifinalists will then move on to a semifinal round where they will present their opinion on given topics. There will be two prepared questions and then a spontaneous answer on a mystery tourism topic.

Judges are drawn from the tourism community and the participants will be graded on content, knowledge, organisation, delivery and the initial essay.

The goal is for secondary school students to develop an accurate understanding of and respect for the importance of tourism in the country, according to competition rules.

It will also assist students to become more involved and aware of Caymanian, Caribbean and world tourism issues and support the government’s human capital development goals. The students are expected also to develop their communication, thinking, language and social development skills through the process.

Topics include information communication technology, community tourism and responsible tourism development.

The winner will become a tourism ambassador for one year, representing Cayman at various events, plus will earn two Cayman Airways tickets and $1,000. Second prize is $500 and backup to the ambassador if they are not available. Third prize is a $100 certificate to Michael’s Genuine Food and Drink and fourth is described as a ‘wild card prize pack’ by the tourism ministry.
