Folks in the Cayman Islands are set to get a Hits and Hip Hop radio station early next month, with the launch of STAR 92.7FM.
“The new media platform will fill the needs of the growing Hip Hop and R and B mix show audience in Cayman who have been waiting for a local broadcasting option to provide this selection,” said Samantha Whittaker, a media spokeswoman for the new station who is with Fresh Image PR.
She said the station’s format will be a mixture of top 100 urban hits, as well as music from up and coming Hip Hop artists.
“Not only will STAR provide listeners with a musical lineup no frequently heard in Cayman, the station will also have live shows, covering entertainment news, artists interviews, events and updates,” Ms Whittaker said.
Owned and headed by Caymanian music veteran John “Selecta Renegade” Watler, the station will have expert input from an individual who has played a key role in Cayman’s music scene since 1996. In addition to being a recognized DJ in the Cayman Islands, he is also known for his many international appearances with music heavyweights across the US and the Caribbean. In early 2001, Selecta Renegade joined the world famous and now Grammy Award winning Black Chiney Sound, where he toured extensively and built a global fan base.
Mr. Watler said, “STAR FM will have a dynamic lineup, providing exhilarating music loaded with individuality and sounds not frequently broadcast to mainstream Cayman.”
The DJ also explained the ethos behind the station’s format, “We focus on music that is proven to do well on commercial radio in other areas, but has not been adopted by Cayman as yet and we are looking forward to being the station that bridges that gap.
We also realise that since we have been deeply involved in the international music scene for so many years, we possess knowledge and contacts that most other stations simply do not have.”
According to representatives for the station, STAR 92.7 will provide cutting edge entertainment by utilising sound technology to bring an enhanced listening experience to the audience.
The station also has plans to embrace new Internet and mobile device technologies that will allow listeners on the go to stay tuned into the radio station on mobile devices and traditional computers.
