Clarity on parody of Premier

An exhaustive period of intense investigations and some pseudo forensics by the Caymanian Compass has culminated in the discovery of the person behind the highly celebrated McKeeva parody song, “What I See Happening.”

Folks may by now have heard the tune, which states, “What I see happening is pure unadulterated, bureaucratic harassment……”

With just under 6,000 hits on YouTube.com, the video has gone “viral” on a Caymanian scale and given the community reason to have a good laugh in serious times. Simultaneously, it has jogged the curiosity of many as to who could be so clever yet virtually unknown among us.

This has been answered for us to a large extent, as the youngster behind the prank – who has asked that they remain anonymous – explained a little about what led him to do the piece.

“I’ve always enjoyed the parodies of Schmoyoho on YouTube (the makers of Auto-tune The News and Songify) and thought to myself…..This can’t be that hard to do. I’ve had the idea of doing one in my head for quite some time now, maybe just under a year. I was just waiting for the right clip and motive,” explained the culprit, who added that they were busy with other music projects. However, “Some people around me also encouraged the idea of pursuing a political parody of yours truly, McKeeva……So they are to thank as well.” When asked if the huge reaction to the songs came as a surprise, the musician said, “Yeah, I am. For Cayman especially! To me it always seemed super hard to release a video that would catch everybody’s attention. I mean, the next day I was hearing stories from people I wouldn’t have believed would have heard it. It was running through corporate offices, schools, and sent via emails and Facebook. I was laughing while creating it, so I guess if that happens it’s a good sign.”

With all the attention the video has garnered, the question of whether more are to come was one that had to be asked. And in the cascade of coolness that has cloaked the youngster’s identity, he replied, “……everyone can look forward to more. There have been more ideas circulating. I can’t promise a due date, as I have to wait and see what pops up. I’ll have to keep my mouth quiet as I don’t want to spoil anything.”

According to the song’s creator, “I worked on it every day up until release night for about five to six days. First I had to find the right key that worked well with his voice, write the chords/music, programme it all, auto-tune the melodies, record backing vocals, mix it….Then go back and do the video.” Lyrics were provided courtesy of the Premier. “It’s literally what he provided me with. I just went with the flow and with a little experimenting and improvisation…..viola,” explained the youngster, who added that he is interested in politics but does not get too involved.

“I’m not a huge fan of the political party system,” exclaimed the youth, suggesting that, “It’d be nice if somehow the government could get along and listen to the people and be more socially active with debates and decision made. Also, please conserve Cayman, some things are just priceless.”

The masked parody creator added, “It’s very satisfying to know others are enjoying it so much. I’d like to encourage everyone to support the local music down here. I’m not sure that everyone realises the amount of locals trying to make it in the music biz, but it shouldn’t be turned a blind eye to. Music is something everyone seems to take for granted, but it can truly change people. Music is emotion.”

  1. I truly hope that the Premier shows a lot of gratitude to this youth who showed such great talent and passion for the well being of his country. I’d say he deserves a scholarship to study music or the arts. This youth has rescued the premier to a large degree.

Music can heavily influence social issues and vice versa. Bob Marley’s message in music and song repatriated black people back to Zion. The Wailing Wailers music and lyrics along with Bob Marley captured the attention of young people throughout the United States and Europe. Needless to say this piece of art with its infectious beat is indeed a masterpiece , and undoubtedly broken down unseen barriers and shaken hard nose foundations of the opposition and other government opponents that perhaps would otherwise remain as untouchables. Is it any wonder that the minimum wage bill by M.L.A Mr. Miller was recently passed?
Music and lyrics is a political psychology often used to reach and command the attention of those that have often lent politicians a deaf ear.
