Sentencing adjourned again in trailer death

Jury returned guilty verdict in July

Sentencing for Veramae Patricia Watson has been adjourned again, this time until 4 November.

After a trial that began on 27 June, a grand court jury found her guilty of causing death by reckless driving, having regard to the condition of her vehicle.

The charge arose from an incident that occurred in September 2007. Watson was driving a vehicle with an attached trailer when the trailer became detached in an area of Breakers near Caribbean Haven. The trailer went across the lane of oncoming traffic and a bus driven by Edwin Edwards collided with it. The bus then collided with a tree. Mr. Edwards died about 10 days later from his injuries.

The verdict was returned on 1 July and defence attorney Clyde Allen requested an adjournment until the following week.

On that date, Mr. Allen raised issues he suggested might better be dealt with in the judge’s chambers, but Justice Alex Henderson did not agree. He agreed to another week’s adjournment for Mr. Allen to show him reasons.

The matter was adjourned until 9 September and then again until 16 September. On that date, Mr. Allen advised that he wanted to submit a document to the court as part of his mitigation, but the document would not be available until October.

The judge adjourned sentencing until 4 November and continued Watson’s bail until then.

At the time of her conviction, the judge had said a sentence in this kind of case was almost always custodial.
