Incident was initially reported as robbery
A former employee and another man pleaded guilty on Friday to theft of about $100,000 in an incident originally reported to police as a robbery.
Sanjay Andre Burrell was the employee who contacted police to report a robbery at Reggae Money Express in Elizabethan Square on 15 January, 2011. However, he and Joseph Lloyd Suberan were soon brought to court on a theft charge.
In Grand Court on Friday, the two men admitted stealing CI$62,667 and US$42,252 from the money transfer business. They also pleaded guilty to possession of an imitation firearm, a 6-millimetre airsoft pistol, with intent to commit the offence.
A charge of conspiracy to steal was left on file.
A third man, O’Brian Emmanuel Wright, pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact, possession of criminal property and use of criminal property.
Details of the accessory charge are that, between 15-20 January, knowing or believing Suberan was guilty of theft and unlawful possession of an imitation firearm, Wright concealed the stolen money and the firearm used in the offence, with the intention of impeding Suberan’s apprehension or prosecution.
During that same time frame he was in possession of CI$40,321 and US$23,349 of the stolen money. Of those sums, he used $10,000.
At the time of the offences Burrell was 21; Suberan, 19; and Wright, 26.
Crown Counsel Marilyn Brandt did not give any background to the charges, as attorneys for all three defendants requested social inquiry reports before sentencing. The matter was put off until 11 November. Justice Charles Quin continued their bail until then.
A woman also faces prosecution in connection with the incident. Ms Brandt advised her attorney to write to a senior Crown counsel about her charges.

WOW…you ALMOST got away with 100K US.
So lets break that down, so the stupid can understand.
These guys are going to spend at least the next 10 years in prison. If you divide that stolen money up. They each ALMOST made 3,333 US per year.
But they didn’t. Because they were stupid and decided to commit a crime to get fast money
Now lets look at reality (this is where you little boys and girls should really pay attention. You teens too!)
If you got a job for even 1k CI a month. You would make 12CI or 15K US a year.
If we calculate that. For the 10 years these guys are sitting in jail because of their stupidity. Even the lowest income earner will make 120K CI in that time, or 144k US. And those that make the money the right way, also stay free.
So..was this really fast money? Or just plain stupidity. Don’t steal kids. It’s just not worth it.
Well done Cayman police and court system, well done.
I think the problem is. Most of these people who steal or rob aren’t thinking.
EVEN IF you get away with stealing 500K. Unless you are willing to move FAR FAR FAR away (like so far away, and so remote that the UK law can’t track you) And even then…how do you transport that money through the airlines. Without reporting it. they will see the money in a scanner. And you can’t put it in the bank and take it out elsewhere.
So….you are here. And as soon as you spend ANY MONEY. People are going to notice. Once they notice you suddenly have money.
You are caught.
So effectively. to not get caught. You can’t spend the that money.
And even if your smart and spend a bare minimum of the money not to draw attention to yourself.
You are going to have to look over your shoulder for the REST OF YOUR LIFE. Cause you never know who will find out about your crime and tell on you. It could be when you got drunk and don’t remember telling people. yet you did. BOOM…your arrested. And if you were smart and barely spent the money to draw attention to yourself. Well now your money is gone.
You are now in jail with no money and the money is now permanently gone, because after your arrest, the police took it away.
Robbery…it looks cool in the movies. But in reality. It just doesn’t work out..ever. It’s just that simple.
