Woman charged in connection with house explosion

Lita Mea Chollette Davis was remanded in custody after appearing in Summary Court on Tuesday charged with damage to property and arson.

Crown Counsel Nichole Petit said Davis, 49, was arrested after a house on Fig Close in West Bay exploded in the early hours of Saturday, 15 October.

Reading from a police summary of the circumstances, Ms Petit said Davis and her boyfriend, Edwin Henry, had been drinking at a West Bay bar.

When they got home, an argument developed and a fight ensued between them. Davis ran into the yard and he locked her out.

Davis became angry and disconnected the propane tank from its hose that ran into the kitchen. She attempted to throw the tank through a side window and on the second attempt succeeded. Mr. Henry was possibly smoking at the time and an explosion occurred.

She did not know her boyfriend was smoking at the time and was sorry for what occurred.

Ms Petit said Mr. Henry was thrown from the house into nearby bushes. He was badly burned and is currently in hospital.

Magistrate Nova Hall asked if charges were being brought in connection with Mr. Henry’s injuries, but there was no certain answer at the time.

The magistrate remanded Davis until Tuesday, 25 October.
