Camana Bay’s popular quarterly evening farmers market, Market at the Grounds, returns next week with a bounty of farm-fresh food and family fun to celebrate the season.
Fall’s arrival means anticipation of harvest time and Halloween, with Cayman’s local vendors offering a traditional taste of the season. The evening market takes place on Wednesday, 26 October, from 3.30pm to 8pm on Market Street.
“It’s a chance for residents to get together, shop for in-season produce and enjoy some traditional Caymanian music and entertainment,” said Patrick Panton, market vendor, East End Garden and Gifts. “It’s a festive, flavourful time that really showcases local culture, crafts and home-grown products and cuisine.”
Visitors may shop for such local produce as okra, callaloo, eggplant, breadfruit, soursop, apple bananas, watermelon and, of course, treasures from the pumpkin patch – just in time for Halloween.
There also is a cornucopia of homemade jellies, jams, pickles and preserves, baked goods, homemade bread, fresh juice, herbs and native plants, handmade soap, traditional and artisan handcrafts including thatch work and jewellery, free-range eggs, along with locally-made sausages, ethnic food and island fare.
Enhancing the atmosphere will be Caribbean vibes of steel pan drums, played by Cayman’s own Earl La Pierre. A highlight will be performances by the UCCI Quadrille Dancers, who will demonstrate this colourful traditional dance every half-hour beginning at 5.30pm. The final show will be at 7.30pm.
Children will have a spooktacular time at the crafts corner, with a range of Halloween-themed crafts and activities. It’s a chance to get creative while learning new skills and meeting new friends.
“Every day is harvest day in Cayman,” Panton said. “And that’s reason enough to celebrate. After the rainy season, we look forward to harvesting the root crops – onions, scallions, carrots, radishes, beets, turnips, and more. And, everyone looks forward to the farm fresh tomatoes, which come in season mid-December.”
The evening market is held four times a year at Camana Bay, each with its own unique theme. The regular farmers market takes place every Wednesday from noon to 7pm. The next evening market is set for Wednesday, 7 December, and will be dressed around Christmas. It’s an ideal time to jump-start holiday shopping, while enjoying a true taste of Cayman.
