Sluggers swing for co-ed kudos

Three 10-2 teams earned number one seeds as the Cayman Islands Little League adult co-ed softball play-offs are set to begin on Monday, 24 October.

In the A League, PwC Legion of Boom won both games of a doubleheader on a rainy Thursday night to earn a bye in the first round of the play-offs. In the first contest they whipped the likes of Tony Coe and Home Gas 24-6. With the loss, Home Gas finished with a record of 7-5 and became the number three seed, the lowest seeding they have had in years.

In the second match, PwC squeaked by Island Taste Hot Stuff 9-8 in a hard-fought game. Island Taste finished as the number six seed with a record of 5-7, but came on strong at the end of the season. They will play Home Gas in their first play-off game on Tuesday.

KM Ltd. finished as the number two seed with a solid 8-4 record and will play the number seven seed KPMG A in the opening round of the A League play-offs.

In the other A League game, the A.L. Thompson’s Hammers, the number four seed, play number five seed Kirk Freeport (who have talents like Neal Appleby).

In the B League, the Coors Light Chuggers overcame a spirited effort from Dart to wrap up first place in the B1 division and earn the number one seed and home-field advantage throughout the play-offs. They will take on the winner of the game between The Royals and HSBC on Wednesday.

The number two seed was Deloitte, which with a 7-5 record, won the B2 division regular season title. They take on the winner of the game between Dart and the KPMG Bounty Hunters.

The number three seed Master Batters finished with a great 9-3 record, only one game behind the Chuggers. They take on the defending B League champion Maples Sluggers (6-6) in their first game. In another key match-up in the B league, Kenneth Davis and the BritCay Premiums play the Glovernauts, both of which finished 7-5 with some big victories over the regular season.

The winner of that game is set to play Coors Light; if the Chuggers get by either The Royals or HSBC in the first round of the play-offs. Both teams beat the Chuggers during the regular season.

In the C League play-offs, Billy Bones finished in first place, four games better than the second-place Security Centre Safes. As a result Billy Bones faces a 3-9 G-Force team. The Safes meanwhile tangle with the PWC Scorpions and captain Johan Bruwer.

The Scorpions finished with a losing record at 5-7, but came on strong by winning their final three games, including a 7-4 victory over Billy Bones in the last week of the season.

In last season’s play-offs, the Scorpions knocked out the heavily favourite Billy Bones team before eventually losing to Security Centre in the championship game. The Scorpions will have a chance to revenge that loss in the first round of the play-offs.

As usual, all postseason matches take place at the Field of Dreams facility in George Town.
