East End got a great start to the 2011-2012 national domino league.
The district’s Mystical Youth side beat Archies by 29 points in the opener at Pirate’s Cove bar. Mystical Youth were last season’s unbeaten winners and look set for another successful run in the Cayman Islands Domino Association competition.
Sunday’s heroes were Kendal Connor and his partner Gordon McLaughlin along with Brent Greene and partner Kirby Powell. All helped to keep East End in the lead throughout the match, which ran its course in spite of inclement weather. Archies put up a good fight with the pairing of John Jobson and David Small proving to be a tough out.
On a whole the contest was well attended and supported by East End residents. Among those that came out were Alberto McLaughlin and Jameion Bodden, the propietors of J and M Production food service. The duo were by the roadside selling conch and roast fish throughout the evening. Bodden spoke about his willingness to support a community event.
“I love it and it’s a great setting,” Bodden said. “The people are coming out and it’s a positive event for our community. The fact that they could get good food as well makes it a good time on a Sunday.
“I’d like to thank Daniel McLean of Pirates Cove who helped us out. Every weekend we’re here and we encourage the public to support local dominoes and at the same time support us.”
A number of sporting personalities were also present. Boxing coach Donie Anglin was out as a reserve for the East End team along with Kelsey Greene (brother of starting player Brent Greene). Anglin played last season for Buttonwood/DLK bar. Also on hand was Ronnie Forbes, father of Olympian hurdler Ronald Forbes and a notable drag racer.
Dominoes action continues this weekend on Grand Cayman. On Sunday, 30 October, the Island All-Stars battle Singh’s Roti Shop at Mango Tree while Eastern Star takes on Sea Inn at Sea Inn Bar. All-Stars ended up in a tie for second place last season while Singh’s were near the middle of the pack. Eastern Star and Sea Inn are two of the rookie clubs this season.
