Cayman’s grapplers are gearing up for Saturday’s Brazilian Jiu Jitsu seminar at the UCCI gym in George Town.
Cayman’s special guest instructor is Cayman-born, Florida based Robert Schwartz, a black belt in BJJ and a winner of many grappling championships. He will share his extensive knowledge to all eager to learn.
The seminar runs from 9.30am-1pm on 29 October. Daigle said the seminar is open to males and females ages 13 and over. If you never trained before but want to learn, this is great way to started. Semina organiser Bob Daigle said: “A special thanks to Cayman Airways for sponsoring Robert’s flight and to Travel Pro’s for sponsoring the venue and medals.
“We even have a few Caymanians flying over from the Brac that will attend. Justin French, a former student of mine has been working behind the scenes trying to promote martial arts for the young people in the Brac. I am very impressed with his enthusiasm.
“When Cayman Airways heard that we had eager young Caymanians wanting to attend this seminar from the Brac they stepped up and sponsored flights for two Caymanians to not only take part they also sponsored their flights for the Cayman Islands Grappling Championships being held on 5 November at the Prep school on Smith Road.”
French and Daigle are also extremely grateful that Pool by Us and Stephanie Grizzel sponsored the seminar and tournament fees for the Brackers visiting Cayman.
The grappling tournament will be the first of its kind in the Cayman Islands. There will be a number of weight classes as well as beginner and intermediate divisions. “If you like watching the submissions you see in the UFC then you will love watching these athletes demonstrate their skills next week,” Daigle said. “Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is very safe and is also an effective form of self defence because there is no striking allowed.
“We are trying to grow Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and the sport of grappling. Spectator tickets for the grappling event will only be $5.”
