Reef set despite wet October days

For road runners looking for a fresh challenge and another part of Grand Cayman other than George Town to compete in, there is a new one in East End this weekend. Don’t worry about the rain, the event will go ahead regardless and promises to be a lot of fun.

RaceCaribbean has its inaugural event, a three-in-one run-walk at The Reef, East End on Sunday 30 October. The first event is a relay race with three 10k legs, which starts at 6am. The relay route starts at The Reef, East End, renowned for quiet, flat roads. It runs down the Queens Highway, turns onto Frank Sound and left onto Sea View Road, through East End and back to The Reef, which is the perfect location for the 30km relay race. Relay teams of three will compete for prizes in top male, female and corporate divisions, as well as overall top three teams.

Also starting at 6am is the 30k solo run. This event, ideal for those preparing for the Cayman Islands Marathon in December, follows the same course as the relay. There are prizes for the top three male and female and other categories too.

At 7am is the East End 5k run-walk which starts and finishes at the Reef. Prizes are for top two male and female overall, under-12 and under-16 male and female. Additionally, there will be prizes for the top two strollers.

As an added bonus the course distances and legs are accurately measured and sanctioned by the Cayman Islands Athletic Association. First aid will be provided by the Red Cross and marshalling by the Cadet Corps.

Organiser Derek Larner said: “People should make a weekend of it and stay at The Reef with special staycation rates available for resident participants from just $95. White Sand water sports are offering a local resident discount, so guests can take the seas on a paddle board or kayak or they can socialise by the Rusty Pelican Beach Bar on Saturday evening before the race.

“We’re also having a barbecue pasta party to fuel up before the race. After the Sunday morning events, the family fun on offer is a costume competition where a staycation at The Reef is up for grabs among some other fantastic prizes. There will be games, face painting and a candy hunt for the kids. After the race we can have a massage at Le Soleil spa where residents receive 10 per cent off. We hope people will come and support this first ever event in East End and make it a fun time.

“We would like to get more walkers from East End, North Side and Bodden Town as many complain that most events of this type are in George Town and often too far for them to travel for a 7am start, so maybe that is the target market for walkers and joggers in the 5km. Not sure who we have coming in just for the race but expect a number of runners to complete the entire 30km in preparation for the Cayman Marathon which is quite impressive and offers another target group.

“The Governor is likely to attend and if he does, we will ask him to be the official starter. There are 49 trophies in all with prize giving about 10am.

Entrants will be able to have breakfast at The Reef.

Race entry is $60 per team, and $20 for individuals in 30km or 5km with children under 16 free. All participants will receive a race t-shirt and breakfast after the events.

Race Caribbean will be at Camana Bay on Saturday 29 October from 10am-2pm for teams and individuals to sign up for the events. Race registration is also available at the Reef.
