Youth boys basketball is nearing its midway point and two clubs will be keen to land in second place.
Team Bodden Town takes on the Grand Pavilion Shockwaves in the boys division of the Appleby Under-19 Basketball League. Weather permitting, the contest is slated to take place at 6pm on the Cayman Islands Basketball Association Court off Eastern Avenue.
As of last Tuesday, both sides were in a tussle near the top of the standings. Bodden Town was in second place with a 4-1 mark while the Shockwaves were third with a 4-2 record. Both are chasing the 4-0 Wolves and are ahead of the 2-3 Esso Blazers, 1-3 Wesleyan Christian Academy and 0-4 John Gray High School.
Bodden Town have showcased a balanced attack. Travis Barnes is the top-rated scorer averaging 12.5 points per game (good enough to rank ninth in the league). Gino Brown averages 8.7 points and Alfredo Cardosa sports 7.8 points.
The Shockwaves meanwhile have excelled behind their big men: Rashaad Powery-Saunds and Philip Webb. Powery-Saunds and Webb are second and third in scoring (nabbing 19.8 and 16.6 points respectively) and are the league’s top rebounders (with averages of 15.6 and 20.8 rebounds per game).
The keys to Tuesday’s contest are pretty simple. Bodden Town needs production from its trio of older players in Shaquille Heath, Maynor Brooks and Christopher Collins (all average four points a game or less). Shockwaves need to feed their big men the ball and have guard Dominic Martucci (13.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, two assists) continue to make plays.
Also on Tuesday, John Gray are slated to battle Wolves at 7.30pm. Though they are winless, John Gray has some talent in the likes of Kaseen Penn (7.7 points, 12.7 rebounds). The Wolves meanwhile are steadied by Most Valuable Player candidate Peter Grant (33.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists).
