New government fees have been added to the Cayman Islands Immigration Law (Regulations), 2011, following the introduction of Term Limit Exemption Permits.
The permits, approved by lawmakers in late September, will allow individuals who would normally reach their seven-year term limit in the Cayman Islands within the next two years to apply for exemptions from that time limit on residence.
Term Limit Exemption Permits can be granted for up to a year at a time for not more than two years in total. The grant of the exemption from the term-limit – or “rollover” – policy does not count toward continuous legal residence requirements for individuals wishing to apply for permanent residence.
According to the regulations, applications for the term limit exemptions will cost $100 per application. Also, adding dependants [children, parents, grandparents] to the term limit exemption permit will cost $200 per year if the worker is employed as a domestic or unskilled labourer and $500 per year for any other category at work.
Annual fees for maintenance of the term limit exemption permit are the same as what a company would pay for a yearly work permit. Companies can receive 50 per cent of the annual fee back from the Immigration Department if the worker leaves the Islands at least six months prior to their permit expiring.
