The PWC Legion of Boom are just as fierce on the diamond as they sound on paper.
The squad is in the A league final for the 2011 Fall Adult Co-ed Softball League. Put on by the Cayman Islands Little League, the competition is staging its championship matches across its three divisions.
PWC play on Wednesday, 9 November at 8pm on field four at the Field of Dreams facility. Their opponent at the George Town site will be the winner of Monday’s semi-final contest between Island Taste Hot Stuff and KM Ltd. PWC starting pitcher Rob Harris states he is confident in victory against either side.
“We were really expecting to be here and we feel like we are the best team,” Harris said. “I’m rooting for KM as they’re the only team that beat us. Most of the guys on Island Taste, well, they’re collecting pension cheques. Either way we will have a formidable opponent.
“We look forward to facing the second-best team on Wednesday. But the Legion of Boom will stand victorious. Anything else would be a lost cause, a disappointment.”
PWC secured their spot in the final last Thursday in a 11-4 thrashing of the A.L. Thompson’s Hammers. To their credit, the Hammers had notable showings from athletes Miguel Pitta, Simon Rivers and Donald Paddyfoot. Heading into the contest softball stalwarts like Molly-Ann Moore, Bobby Boggess and Jayson Gonzalez guided the Hammers to a 7-5 regular season effort and a playoff victory over 2010 champions team Kirk Freeport.
The Legion of Boom meanwhile were A league regular season champions with a 10-2 mark. They were among the competition leaders in runs scored (168) and runs allowed (99). Harris states a number of star players contributed to those numbers.
“We expected to be in the final, we had a fantastic season. We only lost one game on the field and we had a technical forfeit. I’m pretty happy. We handled our business and we got talent all over the field.
“We have the age-defying Johnny Johnson Senior, a freak of nature at close to 50, who is the best baseball player Cayman has ever produced. We got Britty and Braddy Robinson, the true Bash brothers. Scott Murray is the fastest dude in the league, Chris Orlandini is our first baseman and team captain. You can’t find a weak spot, except for pitcher. That guy stinks.”
Wednesday will also host the C league final between the Billy Bones Jager Bombers and The Security Centre Safes. The 8pm contest on field three pits the top two regular season squads in that division as Billy Bones went 10-2 and the Safes 6-6. Billy Bones took out 3-9 rookie club G-Force in the semis while the Safes beat the formidable 5-7 PWC Scorpions last Wednesday.
For the record the B league final took place on Monday between the Maples Sluggers and Doghouse Glovernauts. Doghouse were 7-5 and beat a 10-2 Coors Light Chuggers in the semis. Maples went 6-6 before beating 5-7 Dart. Both sides sport a number of athletes with Doghouse fielding Jon Pump and Shervin Rankin while Maples have Shawn Pitterson and Nicholas Roberts among others.
