Sam Zagorac is a Chicago hitting expert who likes what he sees in local sluggers.
The BullSox Training Academy hitting and fielding instructor was on Grand Cayman over the weekend for the White Sox clinic. Alongside pitching coach Marty Kobernus, Zagorac taught youngsters at the Field of Dreams facility in George Town.
Zagorac, 37, states the Cayman players held their own.
“We covered the basics,” Zagorac said. “The T-Ball level approach is the same at the major league level. Things like proper stance and set-up are what they can get at an early age. That will help them be a more competent player later on.
“The younger ones did a great job. We want to help them develop and play in the US. We had some older guys helping out as coaches in Tyler Lee and Dequan Bennett.”
Zagorac and Kobernus got to work with a crowd of a few dozen kids on Sunday and Monday. In addition to Lee and Bennett, they had help from Cayman Islands Little League president Paul Gallagher, vice president Jeff Pouchie and board member Chris McField. Food was on sale in the clubhouse and the camp took place during ideal weather conditions.
A steady part of the Cayman sports scene the last five years, the White Sox camps have taken place at various times of the year and attracted the likes of pitching guru Don Cooper, former pro Mike Huff and top youth coach Pete Caliendo. Both Zagorac and Kobernus are no strangers to Cayman, having visited in the past.
