Jane Viola Prendergast was born on March 8, 1923, in Bodden Town, Grand Cayman to the late Charlotte (Jennie) Wood and Ashley Whittaker. She was the eldest daughter of seven siblings.
She left Grand Cayman in 1952 to join her husband in the United States. She lived in Philadelphia and Brooklyn and then bought a house in Somerset, New Jersey where she lived for more than 20 years.
Although she left Cayman, she never forgot her roots and continued to maintain a residence in the town where she was born.
Each year, Viola returned to Cayman and kept in touch with her family and friends.
Viola’s life would seem too short for many, but those whom she touched, understand that the quality of existence far exceeds the quantity of time in which one lives.
She was always willing to listen and give advice and she had no problem correcting you when she thought you were wrong.
She was very active in the lives of her children and was a faithful member of Bushwick United Methodist Church for many years. She was also a member of the “Order of the Eastern Stars”.
Some of her many jobs included being a baker, a seamstress and she finally retired from Brookdale Hospital where she was on the nursing staff.
Her interests included family and friends, dancing, tending to her garden of flowers, and doing word search puzzles.
She is predeceased by her husband William Hennage Prendergast Sr., her grandson Christopher D. Jennings, her brothers; Earl Wood, Reginald Wood and Gillard Solomon and her sister Audrey Levy. She is survived by her son William Prendergast Jr., her daughters Judith Hill and husband Winston and Loretta P. Jennings and her husband David; her sister Eulalee Frederick and family; her brother Thomas Wood and family; Grandchildren; William H. Prendergast III and wife Lydia, Nia Prendergast, Julliana E.
