Online poll: Majority will attend Pirates Week

More than 56 per cent of the respondents to last week’s caycompass.com online poll said they were planning on attending at least one Pirates Week event.

Most of them – 212 people or 38.5 per cent of those who said they would be in the Cayman Islands during Pirates Week – said they would attend one or two events.

“I still like to go to the landing parade and for the food,” said one person.

“Just the fireworks on the Friday evening,” said someone else. “I’ve been to 20+ landings when the children were small. It’s a great event for families and visitors.”

“I’m actually helping prepare a float so I’m not sure how long I will stick around,” said another person.

“I leave Pirates Week mostly to the younger crowd,” commented one person.

Sixty people – 10.9 per cent of those who indicated they would be on the Island – said they would go to three or four events and 38 people – 6.9 per cent – said they would attend five or more events.

“I love Pirates Week,” said one person. “So many visitors and so much fun visiting with return visitors.”

“Great fun and a friend visiting from North America,” said someone else. “I’m looking forward to all of the action.”

Eighty-seven people – 13.6 per cent of the total respondents – said they wished they could attend a Pirates Week event, but they wouldn’t be in Cayman.

“I’m stuck north of Toronto until December and the snow is not far off,” said one person who signed their name ‘Half-frozen Snowbird’.

“We’ve both been rolled over,” commented another person.

“Can’t this year, but will definitely attend two or more next year when on Island,” said someone else.

“Crime is up and the US dollar is down,” commented one respondent. “Staying home this year.”

Another 37.8 per cent of the respondents – 241 people – said they would not attend any Pirates Week events this year, but only two of them left comments.

“A waste of time and money,” said one person.

“It’s the festival of the devil,” said someone else.

  1. 2011 Pirates week. From Start to finish .. terrific. Fireworks in Georgetown on Friday night were the Most spectacular I have ever seen. Venue Friday night was terrific, great crowds , fun , safe night. Congratulations to North Side ( Best Side) for their big float win on Saturday. North Side Heritage day was by far the best I have ever attended. The Fire Entrance / Hanging Pirates was very unique and entertaining. The Food stalls were terrific, best food ever anywhere!
Grand Cayman should be proud of it’s Week long Festival , the tourists that were here had a great time. We need more of Fun stuff and a whole lot less criminal activity. The Cayman Islands are reliant on outside financial and tourist support to continue to be the Very Best place on Earth.
    16 years and counting.
    Thank you all,
