Police search for hospital escapee

Royal Cayman Islands Police Service officials have released the photo of a man who escaped from their custody at the Cayman Islands Hospital while under guard for alleged traffic offences.

Charlton Bengar Ebanks, 21, escaped from his police escort at the Cayman Islands Hospital shortly after 7am Thursday.

Hospital officials confirmed a patient there who was under guard “eloped” from the hospital and disappeared.

No details of how Mr. Ebanks was able to leave were released.

Police were investigating the incident to determine how the escape happened.

“We have subsequently been informed by the police that [the patient] is not considered dangerous,” said Medical Director Dr. Greg Hoeksema.

Police said anyone with information on Mr.Ebanks’ whereabouts should contact officers immediately.

The 21-year-old man was arrested in connection with a driving offence and also had an outstanding warrant.

Officers said Mr. Ebanks was hurt in a crash in West Bay on Wednesday afternoon and was taken to the hospital for treatment overnight.

Mr. Ebanks, who is described as being 5 feet 11 inches with brown eyes, dark complexion, black hair and of slim build, is not believed to be a danger to the public.
