Bathing Bodden Town’s dogs

The Protection of Animal Welfare Society for the Eastern Districts has held its fourth Community Dog Wash at the Turtle Nest Inn in Bodden Town.

According to one of the organisers, Giuseppe Gatta, it was a successful event with more than 30 dogs of every age, shape and size being washed from head to tail. Many of the dogs were also treated to a coat trim, nail trim and ear cleaning.

Volunteers from the organisation and the St. Matthew’s University School of Veterinary Medicine participated throughout the morning, tending to the dogs and speaking with dog owners about the importance of animal care and nutrition, disease prevention, and regular health checks by their local veterinarian.

The dogs trotted away with more than just clean coats, as each dog was provided a new collar and identification tag. Each dog was registered with PAWSed with their owner contact information being linked to the new ID tags so that lost dogs may be reunited with families.

Mr. Gatta, president of the organisation, said due to the success of the event, another dog wash was already being planned for January.

“The most important thing is to make a difference in the animal’s life and help educate the community to safeguard their pets in the neighbourhood,” he said. “We strongly encourage pet owners or those interested in becoming a pet owner to take advantage of opportunities such as the dog wash to ensure their pets are receiving the care they need for a healthy and happy life.”

He thanked the local community, Dr. Colin Wakelin and the students of St. Matthew’s.
