Ladies set for Truman march

As Cayman netball springs to life this weekend, the focus rests on young ladies.

The Cayman Islands Netball Association, in partnership with the Ministry of Sports, will stage its annual opening uniform parade on Saturday, 26 November. The Truman Bodden Sports Complex is expected to host Cayman team and school clubs from 3.30pm.

As association president Lucille Seymour states, there will be a great emphasis on young players.

“We will be emphasizing the Under-18 and Under-21 girls,” Seymour said. “If you want to grow, you have to look at the youth and put them in clubs. The second division of this year’s open league will once again feature many young players. Eventually we’d like to put on a U21 league.”

Saturday’s parade, which has taken place for over 12 years, marks the formal start of the 2011-2012 open league, the national women’s competition.

Local netball sees a lot of young talent, especially in the second tier of the league. Roma, last year’s winners, produced starlets like Jahzenia Thomas.

For the parade, teams such as perennial contenders John A Cumber Primary School will be judged in various categories. Prizes are expected to be handed out for areas such as best uniform, best march and best behaviour. Volunteers are also slated to receive prizes.
