Riders raise money for Kiwanis

Cayman’s cyclists, from the occasional to the serious, will take to the road on Saturday, 10 December, for the 30th edition of the Kiwanibike cycling event, organised by the Kiwanis Club of Grand Cayman.

The ride starts at the Blow Holes in East End, with cyclists making their way through Bodden Town and Savannah to the finish line at Smith Cove in
South Sound.

The organisers have arranged for participants and their bikes to be transported from Smith Cove to Blow Holes by MCT Tours and Lemmie’s Trucking services on the morning of the event. Bike pickup will take place at Smith Cove at 6am, with the event starting from Blow Holes
at 7am.

Miss Cayman Lindsay Japal will wave the flag to send the cyclists on their way, after which she will get on a bike and join them on the course as part of a Miss Cayman relay team along with Janelle Muttoo and Crystal Tomlinson. Cayman Islands Governor Duncan Taylor will also be participating.

Bikes from Uncle Bill’s and Kirk Home Centre will be ridden by the Miss Cayman team and the governor before being raffled in a draw open to all entrants who have raised more than $150 in donations.

Participants who raise $30 or more will receive a T-shirt and refreshments after the ride and will also be entered into a prize drawing.

Corporate teams with a minimum of three riders will also be competing for the Kiwanibike trophy, won last year by the Phoenix Group.

The event raises funds for Kiwanis Club projects. One third of the funds raised will go to Derek Haines’ campaign to purchase a special SUV for use by Cayman HospiceCare, while the remaining funds will go to the hundreds of members of Kiwanis Key Clubs in Cayman high schools. Key Club is an international, student-led leadership organisation. Every year, more than 60 students from the Cayman Islands travel to the Key Club convention in Orlando, Florida to gain exposure to new techniques of leadership and community service.

The organisers are asking anyone willing to loan a bicycle for the event contact Paul de Freitas on 916-6331. Rental bicycles also will be available from Cayman Cycle Rentals.
