ITS Cayman are the national hockey champions for the second straight season.
The squad wrapped up the 2011 Fall Cherry Cup series with a 7-6 overtime game two victory on Tuesday. With a 8-4 victory on Sunday, ITS are Logic Adult Roller Hockey League winners for the second consecutive campaign (they won the 2011 Spring title).
ITS goalie Randy Cannon states it felt good to be back-to-back champs at the High Rollers’ expense.
“It’s great to beat those guys again especially since I didn’t play my best game,” Cannon said. “In the regular season too I had problems with them. Then again they got Mildy (Eric Mildenberger), Dan (Etherington) and Tim (Courtis) and they all scored against me on Tuesday night.
“It’s good we were able to keep them down and get the win.”
Like with any good finale, Tuesday’s match was tight. ITS had a narrow 4-3 edge at half-time and were ahead 6-5 heading into the last minute of the game. High Rollers defenceman Darryl Hather would score a controversial high stick goal in front of net with 17 seconds remaining to force overtime. From there ITS captain Mark Missal grabbed the game-winning goal with 1.26 left in the extra session.
Missal was overjoyed and before celebrating stated briefly, “See I told you we’d win. I told you so, didn’t I?”
