Although he will be leaving his chief officer post in the Ministry of District Administration this week, long-time civil servant Kearney Gomez will continue to play a key public role in the Cayman Islands until at least mid-2013.
Mr. Gomez, who is also the Cayman Islands’ elections supervisor, will stay in that job until the general election, currently planned for May 2013, Governor Duncan Taylor’s office confirmed Friday.
During the 2013 elections process, a team of government employees will serve under Mr. Gomez and prepare themselves to take his place afterward, governor’s office chief of staff Steve Moore said. He did not specify the members of the succession team.
Mr. Gomez is retiring from his chief officer post at the ministry on Tuesday. He’ll be replaced in that role by Alan Jones, according to Deputy Governor Franz Manderson.
Governor Taylor signalled that change was coming for the elections office as early as mid-2011. The earlier statement, attributed to Governor Taylor read: “Kearney Gomez remains supervisor of elections and will continue to do so until such time as a successor is appointed.”
The statement continued, “The governor is currently considering proposals for succession planning with regard to the supervisor and deputy supervisors of elections. He is keen to ensure that there is a strong and experienced supervisory team in place for the 2013 general elections.”
