Bike ride put jab in trip costs

Cayman boxers went to Jamaica and celebrated winning four of the seven bouts they competed in. That victory in Kingston was against the Bruising Gym boxers at the Barbican Beach last week.

The victorious boxers were Dariel Ebanks, Diego Rodriguez, Tafari Ebanks and Gino ‘Crusher’ Brown. The silver medallists were Jessica McFarlane-Richards, Reymon Rodriguez and Thomas McField-Brown.

The boxing club is funded by the government and relies on sponsorship from its base at the D. Dalmain Ebanks gym in George Town. The coaches are Donie Anglin, Norman Wilson, Troy O’Neil and Charles ‘The Killa’ Whittaker.

Dariel Ebanks and Kendall Ebanks are hopeful of qualifying for the London Olympics, so too is female boxer Tracey Seymour. But they need to compete in high level competitions and that is expensive.

The boxers are really appreciative of the financial support they get but not wanting to take for granted that funding, two days before the trip they organised a sponsored bike-a-thon.

Thomas Ebanks, president of the boxing association, participated in the 10-mile ride from the gym to Public Beach and back. The others on the bike-a-thon were Jessica McFarlane-Richards, Troy O’Neil, Gino ‘Crusher’ Brown and the Rodriguez brothers, Reymon and Diego.

Thomas Ebanks said: “We raised roughly $1,500 from the bike-a-thon. We’re thankful to all of those that supported it. We got $500 from Cash Wiz for the Rodriguez brothers and then we got other sponsorship from people sponsoring to the tune of $100 down to $1. We wish it was better and we will be doing other fundraisings and give opportunities for other people to support our cause in our bid for Olympic qualification.”
