Elite spot on to face BT

The Digicel Cup final will pit Elite against Bodden Town after two eventful semi-finals produced plenty of action as expected.

The last time it was the wind that disrupted Digicel Cup games and this time heavy rains threatened. Nevertheless, the quality of the football kept the crowd at the TE McField Annex suitably entertained on Sunday.

First game in the second leg round was between coach Elbert McLean’s Bodden Town youngsters who had a 2-1 first leg lead over Roma United. Bodden Town were never really flustered and when Theron Wood scored just before half-time to take the aggregate to 3-1, their passage into the final on Wednesday 22 February looked a formality. Roma tried to press in the second half but could not find that elusive goal to put them back in contention.

The Elite game against Scholars International was a tighter affair. The two West Bay sides are vying for the Premier League title, with Elite ahead only on goal difference. Elite under coach Greg Ebanks had a 2-1 advantage from the first game and Scholars showed their intent from the start that they did not want to repeat mistakes of before and squander chances.

The intensity paid off for Scholars when midfield maestro Nahun Rodriguez drilled in a low shot from the edge of the box to equalise in the 35th minute. With the aggregate now 2-2, this was almost as exciting as the Super Bowl action playing out at the same time. Well almost!

Tempers strained, both teams were reduced to ten when first Scholars striker Carson Fagan was dismissed for dissent then Elite midfielder Gabriel Godet got a second yellow card. The 30 minutes of extra time did not produce a winner so the dreaded penalty shoot out was the final option, which Elite won 4-2.
