The CUC Primary Schools Football programme which ended last week was another resounding success and congratulations should go to the utility company for its continued support as well as the players, coaches, officials and parents who supported.
Kids football is getting a huge boost in Grand Cayman at present what with the recent primary school tournament and Swindon Town’s Under-13 team from England playing three exhibition matches this week.
One of the players who thoroughly enjoyed the matches was Revaughn Johnson who goalkeeps for Red Bay Under-9s who got to the semi-finals in the play-offs losing on a penalty shootout to John A Cumber. His dad George said: “Revaughn has always loved playing in goal. He’s very good at it and makes at least ten saves every match. If you ask his coaches and teachers they’ll tell you how committed he is in goal.”
CUC chief Richard Hew said: “CUC has been involved with primary school football for a long time because we’re seeing exactly what we want to see, which is a high level of volunteering. The kids are the beneficiaries and the community at large is getting involved. It’s a great way to spend Saturday mornings and afternoons and it’s marvellous to see such tremendous support.
“At this level it’s a mix of competitive spirit which they can learn from but also inclusion. Some of the teams are mixed with girls and boys and it’s great to see the kids getting an enjoyable, healthy lifestyle. I hope it’s a foundation and I hope they can now go on to organised sports at a higher level and compete well there.”
