The winter session of the TeleCayman Team Squash League kicked off on Thursday 9 February at South Sound Squash Club. The League will run every Thursday at 7.15pm until 29 March.
This year there has been a change of format as the league consists of eight teams with three players on each team who will compete in a round robin format for the next eight weeks. Each team consists of an A, B and C level player. Some teams are sponsored by a business and have their team funded and some teams consist of individual entries. All players are placed on teams according to their level of play, which guarantees everyone a great match each night. Sponsored teams consist of Team AON, two teams from KPMG and reigning champions from the Fall league, Team Sotheby’s International Realty. The names of the teams with individual players are named after a squash shot such as Team Volley, Team Boast, Team Nick and Team Drive.
After a great first night of some fantastic squash the results are in for week one. Team Sotheby’s International Realty and Team Drive hold two of the top three matches for week 1, while Team Boast and Team Nick hold the third.
The top match for week 1 was between Sheena Conolly, Team Sotheby’s International Realty against Craig Scott (substituting for Trina Savage) from Team Drive. With both players taking position of the tee, the margin for movement was slim. Scott and Conolly tangoed back and forth in a very tight five set match, which ended in over points. Craig ended up taking the win for Team Drive 3-2 (9/11, 11/4, 11/8, 7/11, 12/10).
The second most memorable match for the night was also from the Team Sotheby’s International Realty’s, Glenn Stark and Team Drive’s, Julian Jervis. Teenager Jervis, who is an upcoming squash star, is coached by Stark who is the Cayman Islands national coach. As pupil took on the more experienced coach spectators knew a good match was pending. Stark won the first game, however Jervis retaliated and took the second. Both players now starting to feel their legs continued on with some fantastic rallies. In the end, Stark’s experience outwitted, outlasted and outplayed the young protégé and took the match in four games 3-1 (11/8, 7/11, 11/6, 11/4).
