Gospel singer makes impact

Singer Michelle T has been making a splash on the gospel scene in the Cayman Islands lately with her single The Prayer, which has flown to No. 1 on the Love FM Top 40 Gospel Chart.

The tune, which is a remake of the single made popular by Americans Yolanda Adams and Donnie McClkurkin, was redone by Michelle and Andre Leon, another local singer making his way through the ranks.

The rendition of the tune done by two singers was done in a reggae style and served as a strong follow up to Michelle T’s version of Lord I Believe in You, which made it to No. 1 on the same chart last year.

“I was brought up in church, singing with the popular group Grace Thrillers as a child,” she said. “I feel like it has come full circle. I dabbled in the secular music arena for a little time, but you cannot stray from your roots and as the scripture says, ‘If you train a child up in the way he/she should grow, they shall not depart from it.’”

Michelle said her musical efforts these days are more about a connection with God and passing on a blessing.

“I am grateful for the change and a second chance,” she said.

In addition to her busy schedule as a mother, student and full-time employee, Michelle T is working on a full length album and has completed several songs already with more said to be in the works with some of the top gospel music producers in Jamaica.

“Whatever we are blessed with, we must use for the glory of God,” she said. “We never know what life has to offer.”

The singer said she hoped that one day people would embrace gospel music as they have done with secular offerings and “support whatever is done in the name of the Lord.”

Regarding her views on the musical industry in the Cayman Islands, Michelle T said it would be great to see someone come forward who could help to assist artists, as it is a great investment and there is much talent here. She said she was optimistic about what she is doing and happy to be helping make a positive change.
