Honduras scores fourth

Honduras are clearly the creme of the crop within indoor football.

The Bay Islands boys re-affirmed their prowess with a fourth consecutive Cayman World Cup of Football championship over the weekend. The Central Americans, featuring star talents like Rene Carter, Immer Carter and Jedd Ebanks, have won the tournament in every year of its existence, as the competition only started back in 2008.

Team Honduras would edge out a host of nations in England, Scotland, Canada and Costa Rica. All showcased a number of characters like ageless wonder Al Johnson (a Scotsman who scored the game-winning goal against England), Ben Marler and Dylan Hume.

Organized by the Cayman Sports Authority, the 2012 tournament took on a more friendly mood this year. Various countries were unable to source a team and the result was the tournament essentially consisted of exhibition games. In the past, residents have suited up for a number of nations like Africa, Ireland and Brazil.

For the record, the competition took place at Kings Sports Centre. Teams consisted of current players in the Kings five-a-side football leagues. Interestingly, those leagues are near their conclusion with various playoff games ongoing.

News of the World Cup comes after the sports authority staged the annual Cayman Islands Humane Society Kickball fundraiser tournament. That competition attracted eight teams at the Field of Dreams facility in George Town. Maples would take the title of kickball champions away from 2011 winners the Doghouse Devils by edging BDO and the WestStar TV Kick Stars in the 2012 playoffs.

To be clear, kickball is a hybrid sport which has been a childhood favourite for many Cayman residents. Also known as soccer-baseball, kickball features the same rules as in baseball with the big difference being one must kick a large rubber ball rather than hit a baseball with a bat.
