Another great night of squash at the South Sound Squash Club for TeleCayman Team Squash League as teams settled into week 2 of an eight-week league. The League runs every Thursday at 7.15pm until 29 March.
Sponsored teams for the Winter TeleCayman Team Squash League include; Team Aon, Team Team Sotheby’s International Realty, and two teams for KMPG, Team KPMG 1 and Team KPMG 2. The other teams have been randomly named after a specific shot in the game of squash, Team Volley, Team Boast, Team Nick and Team Drive.
This week the tie between Team Volley and Team Boast take the spot for the TeleCayman’s top two matches of the week.
The top match was between Eilidh Bridgeman, 18, from Team Boast against Alistair Cowper, from Team Volley. This match was very close with many long rallies, great gets and effective shot. Bridgeman took Cowper by surprise in the first game winning it 11/6. Cowper then found his legs and rhythm taking the next two games 11/7, 11/5. Bridgeman had to dig deep and cut back on some frustrating unforced errors. Once she did, she changed the course of the match and fought back to win the final two games 11/8, 11/8. Final match score went to Bridgeman and Team Boast 3-2 (11/6, 7/11, 5/11, 11/8, 11/8).
Also involving a junior was the second most intriguing match of the night with Daniel Murphy, 15, from Team Volley taking on Ruan de Villiers from Team Boast. In the beginning, it would have been Murphy who would have been considered the under-dog, however never under estimate the determination of an upcoming, talented junior. The teenager surprised many, including his opponent de Villiers by playing very smart, steady squash. Not without at fight Ruan battled two of the games to over points, however Daniel took the match 3-0 (11/9, 12/10, 14/12).
