Students at Cayman Prep and High School have donated $3,000 to the Cayman Island Cancer Society.
The gift was money raised from a fun activity day held recently at the school campus in Grand Cayman.
“We wanted to make the fundraiser a bit more enjoyable for the students,” said Nicola Sowrby, middle school head teacher. “Instead of just walking around the school we decided we would host a fun day for the students.”
Students gathered on a playing field decorated in many colours after paying a $10 fee to represent one of the cancer colours such as pink for breast cancer and gold for childhood cancer.
Cancer Awareness colours have become increasingly popular to gather attention for the disease and its causes.
From the amount of squeals, shouts and laughter, to the point that Ms Sowrby had to use a bullhorn, it was evident the students had fun raising the money.
Off to the corner of the field, students occupied time filling boots with water and chucking them as far as they could onto the field, while others formed haphazard lines to participate in games such as a three-legged race, a human wheel barrow and sack race.
Students jumped into plastic garbage bags in preparation of the sack race. Most students made it to the finish line in tattered bags because the bags did not hold up well to the jumping. All who finished the race claimed they were the winners. Even teachers judging the event had a difficult time picking a winner.
The third event, a wheel-barrow race, even had this reporter laughing. Students grabbed other students by the legs, careened down the field at a mad dash while students on their hands desperately tried to keep up the pace.
A 20-metre relay dash also had students huffing and puffing back to the finish line in good fun. The day included face painting and snacks.
