Premier supports Reading Week

Students at Grace Christian Academy in West Bay had the opportunity Friday, 17 February to learn more about Grand Cayman when two elected members visited the school in support of Reading Week.

Cayman Islands Premier McKeeva Bush, along with West Bay MLA Cline Glidden, visited the school and read with students for about two hours.

Reading to Year 3 students from the E and H Paschalides short story children’s book, This is Paradise, Dis is Cayman, Mr. Bush identified with students how Cayman was so much better off now, than in earlier years when he attended school.

In those days, Mr. Bush said classes were held under a shady tree and he went to school barefoot, sometimes walking over sharp iron shore rocks to get to classes. Mr. Bush also shared with students from the book about well-known people on the Island, local attractions and cultural dishes.

Mr. Bush said he enjoyed participating during the Reading Week session and he hoped more students would become enthusiastic about reading.

Class teacher Katherine Deane said reading was an ongoing project at the school and at various times during the year representatives from the community were invited to come and share with students.

After Mr. Bush left the classroom, student Zandie Smith said why she thought the premier came to her classroom.

“He came to tell me about Cayman,” she said. “I know I like turtle meat and he talked about that.”

George Hydes learned there were more than 50,000 people in the Cayman Islands, and he was proud to have visited some of the places on Grand Cayman that Mr. Bush read about.
