Local school children continue to sparkle in Cayman Islands basketball.
The biggest stage for them is the ongoing KPMG Under 14 Basketball League, put on by the Cayman Islands Basketball Association. Endorsed by the Department of Sports, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Sports, the competition features six squads from three institutions.
One notable showing came recently when the Clifton Hunter High School Diamonds and the Triple C Girls produced a scoring onslaught. Both teams registering their scoring highs for the season, combining for 76 points. The pace was fast and furious but both teams seemed to be up to the challenge physically as they sped up and down the Triple C school hall. The Diamonds were able to pull away in the fourth quarter and keep a 14-point lead en route to a 46-32 victory.
On the boys side, Tarpon Academy edged Marlin Academy 22-20 in a John Gray High School showdown. Tarpon fans must have very little fingernails left to chew as the team has a flare for the dramatic with a number of close results. Marlin went into the game on a high after starting strong behind Alex Thompson and Alexandre Brown. Tarpon figure to be a formidable team the rest of the season behind Arin Taylor (who starred for the Shockwaves in the U16 and U19 leagues) and his point guard skills along with Akeem Hyde.
