Cayman’s two new secondary school campuses will cost a total of $100 million each, Education Minister Rolston Anglin revealed Tuesday.

Mr. Anglin said an additional $13.6 million was needed to complete Clifton Hunter High School campus in time for the beginning of the next academic school year in September, bringing that construction project to a total of $99.5 million.

Another $43 million would be required to complete John Gray, bringing the construction costs of that project to a total of $97.4 million. So far, the construction of Clifton Hunter and John Gray have cost $85.9 million and $54.4 million, respectively.

The full costs of the controversial schools construction projects were disclosed at a specially convened Finance Committee meeting at which the government sought approval to spend an additional $49 million of the public purse.

Among additional amounts being sought in the supplementary budget were $7 million for the National Roads Authority, $5 million for overseas medical treatment for indigents and uninsured people, and $14.5 million for construction costs associated with the two high schools and new classrooms at primary schools in Grand Cayman.

The secondary schools projects have been mired in delays and controversy, with the government terminating the contract of the original contractor Tom Jones International in December 2009. Mr. Anglin said an ongoing dispute between Tom Jones International and the Cayman Islands Government relating to payments for the project would go before an arbitration hearing in July.

The Finance Committee meeting continued Tuesday afternoon.

  1. Just mind-boggling… here we have two school campuses costing 100 million dollars, and it is said that the public beach zone along the beach in West Bay, which Dart will be getting in the ForCaymanAlliance deal, cost that same amount, 100,000,000 dollars!

The evaluation of properties and constructs – how do they do it??

  2. Wow, that must be one hell of a school, Complete school systems consisting of several schools in US cities much larger than Cayman have less than that for thier whole budget. Some College Universities don’t cost nearly as much.

Hopefully it will all be worth it with the schools turning out a lot of honor students.

  3. If I’m not mistaken, this is nearly double the Tom Jones contract, which was cancelled over a dispute about paying 17 million in certified completed work (that may yet have to be paid for). What a waste.
