Last year’s top softball team is rolling towards another title.
In fact the Cayman Islands Softball Association 2011 league male champion, the West Indies Marine Patriots, do not seem to be slowing down. They have stormed out of the gates this season with victories in their first four games.
Johnny Johnson Senior and Bradimir Robinson are the leading players in keeping their winning streak alive. The Patriots head into this campaign with heavy expectations. Behind talents like Bradley Robinson and Peter Whittaker, the squad has won the last two league championships.
Jose’s Escape Pirates, led by Rupert Whittaker Senior and Latinos, led by Donald Watler, certainly will have a difficult task in dethroning the champs this time around.
Over in the female division, Caledonian Group Services Wildcats and Cayman Auto Diagnostic Clinic Stingers each have a win. However, Cayman National Bank Team Xtreme, the 2011 winners, do not have a win after their first game.
News of the season start comes after the association held its official opening ceremony earlier this month at the Field of Dreams. Numerous players and sponsors were honoured for their efforts in 2011.
Male games are played at the West Bay field next to the Jimmy Powell Cricket Oval on Sundays from 2:30pm. Female games are played at the Field of Dreams facility in George Town on Saturdays at 8pm.
League play continues this weekend on Saturday, 31 March, and Sunday, 1 April. There will be no games next weekend due to the Easter holiday period.
