Swimming and striding toward health in Cayman Brac

This weekend, the Cayman Islands Cancer Society, Cayman Heart Fund and the Cayman Islands Amateur Swimming Association are teaming up in Cayman Brac.

On Saturday and Sunday, 21 and 22 April, the three groups will be in the Brac spreading the word about keeping healthy – and some will be getting their feet wet while others will be hitting the road.

On Saturday morning, the Cayman Heart Fund and the Cancer Society, along with the Lions Club and Rotary Club of Cayman Brac and Health Services Authority, will host a free public health fair where they will provide vouchers for free mammograms, pap smears and PSA tests, along with education pamphlets. There will also be three presentations, on the BRCA breast cancer gene; colorectal cancer; and women and heart disease.

The health fair will be held at the Alexander Hotel from 8am to 12 noon on Saturday.

Milena Connolly from the Cayman Islands Cancer Registry will also be present at the health fair, so anyone on the Brac who knows or is a cancer survivor, who has not yet registered is encouraged to attend. Family members can also register information on cancer patients who have passed away.

Later on Saturday, at 3pm, the Cayman Islands Amateur Swimming Association will hold its 800-metre sea swim at the south side of Cayman Brac, from Carib Sands to Divi Tiara Beach.

Those who want to get some exercise, but don’t feel like braving the sea, can join the Stride for Your Heart run/walk the following morning, Sunday, which starts at 7am from the Alexander Hotel. Registration costs $10 and the first 50 people to register will get a t-shirt. There are also prizes up for grabs. Registration will be done prior to the event on Sunday morning at the Alexander Hotel.

Jennifer Weber of the local cancer society said that while there were a lot of events and fundraisers and health awareness campaigns in Grand Cayman, the Sister Islands were not being forgotten.

The Cancer Society is currently helping two financial aid cancer patients in Cayman Brac. “We’ve sent a hospital bed there, paid utility bills, bought groceries for people and helped several mastectomy patients by providing prosthetic breasts and bras,” Ms Weber said.

The health fair will be held at the Alexander Hotel from 8am to 12 noon on Saturday.
