Sister Islands hurricane drills done

The Sister Islands completed its annual hurricane preparedness exercises in record time year.

In Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, 53 government buildings were shuttered or verified as ready for storm season – 45 in the Brac and eight in Little Cayman.

The 12 teams taking part in the exercise completed their checks in a record time of two hours and 58 minutes, compared with last year’s time of three hours and 42 minutes.

The exercise was held on Friday morning, 4 May and was attended by Deputy Premier and Minister for District Administration, Works, Lands, and Agriculture Juliana O’Connor-Connolly, Acting Deputy Chief Officer Jonathan Jackson, District Commissioner Ernie Scott, Deputy District Commissioner Mark Tibbetts, Works Manager Noli Cruz and Deputy Works Manager Justin Bodden.

Team 2, headed by team inspector Jeff Jaeger and covering West End Primary School shelter and classrooms and two government cottages, was the fastest team to complete its task, finishing its work in one hour and 45 minutes. The team members included: Team leader Andrew Ryan, Wesley Pryce, James Scott, Colbert Scott, Leo Scott, Norman Scott, Devon Scott and Shem Tibbetts.

“The time to prepare for the upcoming hurricane season is now,” Ms O’Connor-Connolly said.

She urged all businesses and families on the two islands to similarly ensure their structures are protected. “While we pray for a safe and minimal hurricane season, we cannot become complacent or take anything for granted,” she said.
