The return of drag racing in Cayman figures to offer extra drama.
Joe Cool Racing and NAPA are putting on a meet this weekend, 19-20 May, at Breakers Speedway. Event organizer Joe Myrie states prospective racers are encouraged to topple Billy Ebanks’ time of 5.567 seconds.
“Billy, our current record holder, will be there,” Myrie said. “I’m laying down the challenge for anyone that can come close to Billy’s time. There’s a $1,000 prize for anyone that can beat Billy. He has had the record quite awhile now.
“Cash prizes and trophies are on offer. We will try bracket racing as I want to give it a preliminary run. If that does not work out on the day, we’ll do time classes. It will be nice seeing cars running down other cars and getting good starts off the line.”
Ebanks set the mark by driving a Dodge Daytona 120.3 miles per hour down the 1/8 mile track. The West Bayer is officially Cayman’s fastest driver.
This weekend’s meet sees a test and tune session on Saturday evening, 19 May, with the actual race starting at 2pm on Sunday, 20 May. Admission is $5 at the gate, with pit passes costing $10 and drivers paying a $40 race fee (which covers a tuner/mechanic).
With this May being an especially rainy period Myrie, 59, states there is a backup plan in case of inclement weather.
“Sunday will see a brief test and tune session starting at noon and cutting off at 1pm. Everyone needs a time-slip to race. We want to start 2.30pm at the latest and end at 6.30pm.
“NAPA and I are putting on the race and everything has got to be prompt. In the case of a rain-out, the race will be held on Monday, 21 May, which is a holiday.”
