Commission member resigns appointment

Richard W. Ground served as Cayman’s Attorney General 1987-92

Former Chief Justice of Bermuda Richard Ground has resigned from Cayman’s Judicial and Legal Services Commission, leaving Governor Duncan Taylor the task of considering candidates for that appointment.

The commission came into being with the 2009 Constitution, which states that two of the commission’s eight members will be people who hold or have held high judicial office in a Commonwealth country or Ireland, but do not currently hold such office in the Cayman Islands.

Mr. Ground, 63, retired as chief justice and simultaneously resigned from the commission, effective 28 March.

His public career began in Cayman, when he came here as Senior Crown Counsel in 1983 from private practice in the United Kingdom. He was appointed attorney general in 1987 and served until 1992, when he went to Bermuda as a judge of the Grand Court. He served as chief justice in Turks and Caicos until 2004, when he returned to Bermuda as chief justice.

During his time here he married Dace Ground, the first director of the National Trust for the Cayman Islands. An accomplished photographer, he took pictures of Grand Cayman’s wildlife and published a collection called Creator’s Glory to the benefit of the National Trust.

Mr. Taylor thanked Justice Ground for his dedication and commitment to the commission during his tenure and wished him the best in his future endeavours.

A government news release did not indicate when the new appointment would be made.
