The Spanish Grand Prix two weeks ago continued the season’s tradition of excitement, drama and unexpected results, with Venezuelan driver Pastor Maldonado driving a Williams winning. The Venezuelan is only in his second F1 season and it was the first win for the Williams team since 2004.
It was the most exciting race so far, with a totally unpredictable outcome. As usual, the race was watched locally by plenty of members of the Fans of F1 of the Cayman Islands at the Club House in Treasure Island, which has become the home of the sport.
The next race is the most famous and anticipated one on the Formula 1 calendar, Monaco, this Sunday. This magical street circuit is different from all other races in that it is a lower speed circuit.
Monaco requires less top speed and unique aerodynamic set-ups to keep the cars firmly planted while racing around the two mile circuit at speeds exceeding 175mph and negotiating its 19 challenging corners.
Over 90 fans have watched from Club House so far this season, from 9-11am and another full house is expected this weekend. The fact that cool prizes are given out free to members after the race from generous sponsors, helps boost the numbers.
One of this club’s founding members and sponsors, Danny Roach, said: “All race fans like a highly competitive season and we have that this year in spades. We are seeing much more variety in the team shirts, flags, hats and even ‘cow bells’ that people are bringing to the races now.
“We had six winners of door prizes last time, which were gas vouchers from ESSO, Jose Cuervo Tequila from Cayman Distributors, Red Bull Racing souvenirs from Zulu’s and a Distributing Oral B electric toothbrush from Care Pharmacy.”
Roach likes the fact that the races have produced so many winners so far because it helps maintain interest.
“Every team has a proper chance to score significant points this year, with formerly strong teams such McLaren and Red Bull struggling to even make it into the top 10.”
Another member of the group, Andreas ‘Zulu’ Kettner, who is the Red Bull distributor here, said: “We have been struggling to find good speed from our cars. Alonso seems to be able to work miracles with his car, even if it is not the strongest on the track.”

Another terrific Formula 1 article from the Compass. It is great to see such a variety of sports being covered in our ‘hometown’ paper.
It would be nice if we could see some of the pictures that are in the print version of these articles, on the web version as well.
