Update: Cayman Brac schools were scheduled to open as normal on Thursday.
Schools in Grand Cayman reopened Wednesday morning, but Cayman Brac’s schools were closed due to heavy rains.
In an advisory published on the Cayman Prepared website at 6.48am Wednesday, the Ministry of Education advised that the Brac schools would close as the Sister Islands were experiencing heavy rainfall and conditions were expected to deteriorate further throughout the day.
Tammy Banks-DaCosta of the Department of Education in Cayman Brac said that, despite the weather, the Layman E. Scott Senior High School would open at noon to enable students to sit their scheduled chemistry and written water sports exams.
“We didn’t experience any flooding in the schools, we had some minor leaks but those have been taken care of,” Ms Banks-DaCosta said.
All government schools were closed in Grand Cayman on Tuesday amid heavy rains, strong winds and flooded roads. The University College of the Cayman Islands and the International College of Cayman Islands also closed on Tuesday afternoon due to flooding and rainstorms, but both reopened Wednesday.
All schools in Grand Cayman reopened Wednesday morning as weather conditions improved.
According to a severe weather bulletin issued at 10am Wednesday, satellite pictures showed a large area of cloudiness with embedded thunderstorms moving northeastward across the Cayman area. Weather models indicated the possibility of 1 to 3 inches of rainfall over the Cayman area, especially over the Sister Islands during the following 24 hours.
According to Cayman Islands National Weather Service, Grand Cayman residents could expect a gradual decrease in rainfall from Wednesday evening, but continued flooding of low-lying areas was expected mainly over the Sister Islands up to Thursday morning and residents were urged to continue to take necessary precautions.
Rough seas were also forecast to continue and small craft were advised to exercise caution over open water.
Cayman Airways reported that all its flights were operating as scheduled on Wednesday. A number of flights to and from the Sister Islands had been affected due to the weather on Monday.
