Youth flag football in Cayman is set to culminate.
The Security Centre Youth Flag Football League is in its playoff stages. Matches have taken place on Saturday mornings at the Camana Bay sports field.
The first round of the playoffs took place last weekend. In the senior division, the Security Centre Packers dominated all season and met the fourth-ranked flag football association Eagles. The teams played an extremely close game but Sonny Powell and the Packers managed to overcome the Eagles 16-14.
The Chrissie Tomlinson Memorial Giants took on the Zulu Warriors in the second game. Both teams had depleted rosters but still fought hard. Despite an aggressive drive in the final seconds, the Giants managed to hang on to defeat the Warriors 16-15.
The Packers will now battle the Giants in the championship game on 9 June.
In the junior division, the dominant Broadhurst Buccaneers were the number one seed coming into the playoffs. They took on the struggling Walkers Wolverines, who they defeated 36-6.
Elsewhere, the Burger King Gators were the second seed and they took on the third-ranked Maples Raiders. The Raiders came out strong at the start of the game and scored quickly, taking a six-point lead into the half. In the second half, the Raiders scored again, stretching their lead to 19-6. The Gators then had a touchdown and a two point conversion, making the score 19-14. In the dying seconds, the Gators managed to score again to win 20-19.
The number one seeded Bucs now take on the second seeded Gators on 9 June for the championship.
Over in the middle division saw two wildcard games, with the third seed Cayman Islands Flag Football Association Colts downing the sixth-ranked Security Centre Patriots 16-0. The other match saw the Popeyes Saints (fourth) took on the SRS Steelers (fifth). The Saints had defeated the Steelers the week before 25-0.
This was a different game though and the Steelers played like a team possessed. Quarterback Michael Gocul showed great patience in the pocket, orchestrating an offensive attack which was too much for the Saints. The Steelers defeated the Saints this time 33-0.
Both the Colts and the Steelers then took on the top two teams. The undefeated Dart Dolphins faced the Colts, who showed their earlier victory was no fluke, beating the Dolphins 14-6.
SRS battled the second seeded Al la Kebab Titans and the Steelers took an early lead of 12-0. In the second half, the Titans answered, scoring once and then again in the final minute of the game to tie the score at 12. The Steelers then quickly drove down the field and scored to win 18-12.
The Colts and Steelers will now match up in a title game for the underdogs. The fact that these low seeded teams are playing for the championship shows that anything can happen in the playoffs.
